Weekly Update from Rich Muny, VP of Player Relations

I wish to share some good news with you. Last week, I mentioned that PPA has been working diligently on behalf of players with balances on Ultimate Bet and Absolute Poker. Well, our efforts as a community in taking grassroots actions to reach out to the Department of Justice have helped us generate the attention we needed. On Monday, PPA Executive Director John Pappas and one of our attorneys had a conference call with the Department of Justice Asset Forfeiture and Money Laundering Section (AFMLS) to discuss both the UB/AP situation and FTP remission.

The conference call went well. PPA was able to present our case that the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York (SDNY) should bring fraud charges in the matter of UB/AP and that remission should be set up for the victims of these sites. AFMLS led off by commending PPA and the poker community in being well organized and in continuing to take our case to the DoJ (I didn’t add any hyperbole…that was the comment). AFMLS discussed ways PPA can push SDNY to charge Cereus principals with fraud, including a formal request from PPA sometime after the Full Tilt Poker remission bar date — which PPA will do. This continues to be a long shot, of course, but at least we are working up the ladder.

The Full Tilt Poker remission discussion also went well. AFLMS told PPA that 80% of those with petition and control numbers accepted the balance provided by claims administrator Garden City Group and that roughly 35,000 claims have been filed. AFLMS further reported that the balances of players tagged as affiliates are still being determined. AFLMS also restated that these players will have 30 days from the date they receive notice to apply from Garden City Group to review and submit their petitions.

The new news for FTP victims is that remission e-checks for uncontested balances are “optimistically” expected to go out sometime before the end of the first quarter of 2014.

New York Proposition 1 Passes

Great news in New York. PPA-backed Proposition 1, a constitutional amendment to authorize brick-and-mortar casinos in that state, won on Election Day yesterday! This amendment will create new opportunities for all of us, state residents and non-residents alike, to play poker (and other table games) in the new casinos authorized by this proposal.

PPA at the World Series of Poker®

PPA Director of Membership and PokerPAC Bryan Spadaro was in Las Vegas for the final table of the World Series of Poker, representing poker players and tweeting the action. If you aren’t following PPA on Twitter then you missed out! Please be sure to follow PPA on Twitter at twitter.com/PPAPoker.

Full Tilt Poker Remission Reminder

If you have money on Full Tilt Poker, be sure to submit a claim by November 16th at fulltiltpokerclaims.com. This deadline is approaching fast and applies to everyone except those tagged as affiliates by claims administrator Garden City Group, so do not miss your chance to get your money back.

Webcast: Poker Advocacy with Rich Muny

The Poker Advocacy with Rich Muny webcast airs live each Monday at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT on OnTilt Radio. This week’s show features an interview with Scott “ElevenGrover” Bell. We discussed his terrific new film, UltimateBeat — Too Much to Lose, which details the UB/AP cheating scandal. The film discusses of the roles of Russ Hamilton, Greg Pierson, Scott Tom and others in the scandal, as well as the efforts of 2+2 posters and others in helping uncovering it. It features interviews with Mason Malmuth, Steve “Chops” Preiss, Steve McLoughlin, Noah Stephens-Davidowitz, and many others familiar to the poker community. In my opinion, it is required viewing for every poker player.

If you missed the live webcast, I hope you will listen to or download the free podcast and check it out. It is available as a directly downloadable MP3 file (right-click to save, left click to listen) or as a free iTunes download. Please also subscribe to Scott Bell’s YouTube channel here. Once they have 100 subscribers, they will be able to host a special interactive broadcast.

Each show features great guests and the best discussion on poker legislation. Please be sure to tune in each Monday evening for the live webcast!!
