Weekly Update from Rich Muny, VP of Player Relations
You have likely heard about this evening’s GOP presidential debate. As you may know, it is limited to the top ten candidates, meaning the other seven candidates are relegated to what has been dismissed by many in the media as the “kid’s table debate.” Interestingly, for all Sheldon Adelson’s backing of candidates who hypocritically read focus group tested talking points on states’ rights from their Teleprompters while simultaneously opposing the rights of states to authorize Internet poker, it does not seem to be paying off. Four of Shelly’s boys — former Gov. Rick Perry (R-TX), Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-LA), RAWA/S. 1668 sponsor Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), and former Gov. George Pataki (R-NY) — find themselves at the kid’s table this evening. Even more interesting is the fact that Pataki, who co-chaired Adelson’s Coalition to Stop Internet Gambling (CSIG) until announcing his presidential run, and Graham almost failed to qualify even for this consolation prize. FoxNews lowered the bar from polling at least 1%, which neither could muster, to simply allowing all the declared candidates who did not make the main event to participate. As a result, the real debate includes just two openly anti-poker candidates: RAWA cosponsor Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), whose star has faded somewhat over the past couple months, and former Gov. Mike Huckabee (R-AR). Huckabee, as you may recall, is infamous for his FoxNews “interview” with CSIG co-chair former Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-AR). It was more like an anti-poker, pro-Adelson infomercial, complete with the laughable claim from Lincoln that Adelson’s Venetian employs psychologists to ensure patrons do not bet more than they can afford…a claim Huckabee did not challenge. The GOP presidential race is starting to look better for poker than it did just a couple of months ago. While clearly not a pro-poker field overall, our opponents are either losing momentum or had none to start with. Please do your part to ensure lawmakers and media continue to hear the pro-poker perspective. Simply like the PPA Facebook page and the Poker Daily Action Plan Facebook page, and be sure to participate in the advocacy effort. Thanks! Ron Paul Returning to the Poker Advocacy Webcast
