Weekly Update from Rich Muny, VP of Player Relations
Last week, I shared the news that, due to the strong fight by poker supporters, Sheldon Adelson and his minions may be forced to scale back the scope of the so-called Restoration of America’s Wire Act. Rather than the full ban they want, our opponents may be forced to settle for a push for a moratorium on new states licensing online poker sites while a federal study on online poker and other online gaming is conducted. My first thoughts on this were quite incredulous. For one, it still impacts states considering the online poker question in exactly the same manner as RAWA, as it would ban them from moving forward. Another obvious question is how Rep. Jason Chaffetz will claim to wish to learn about online poker safety, geolocation, etc., when he adamantly refused to let experts in online poker security testify as his farcical March hearing on RAWA. Chaffetz would not have needed to search far — PPA organized technical demonstrations on Capitol Hill that were conducted throughout the day of the hearing! All that being said, it is definitely not all good news. Adelson is up to his old tricks. Rather than seeking to win the hearts and minds of the American people on his anti-poker agenda, Adelson prefers to press his case in the backrooms of Congress. His Coalition to Stop Internet Gambling has added yet another lobbying firm, Squire Patton Boggs, to the roster. Lobbyists for Squire Patton Boggs include former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-MS), former Sen. John Breaux (D-LA) and many former congressional staffers. So, the push is on…again. As PPA Executive Director John Pappas and I say often, we have to win every time, while Adelson has to win just once. We have pushed them back thus far. Let’s win this one too. Can I count on you to step up to take on this challenge? Take Action
Last week, I asked you to send PPA’s prewritten, fully editable letter specifically in support of Rep. Joe Barton’s bill. This week, we have another new letter, this one focused on opposition to RAWA (H.R. 707 / S. 1668). You can send this letter to your Congressman, both of your Senators, and the President in just 60 seconds. Please take a moment to send the letter and to ask friends and family to send theirs as well. Please ensure your elected representatives know you want Congress to support your right to licensed online poker! ![]() Webcast: Poker Advocacy with Rich Muny
