Weekly Update from Rich Muny, VP of Player Relations
The news this week for poker continues to center around two opposing forces – the effort to advocate for the two bills in Congress to license online poker vs. the efforts of the Venetian and its parent company, Las Vegas Sands Corp., to lobby Capitol Hill for a national online poker ban. The stakes could not be higher!
To be frank, as I shared last month, it is my belief that federal legislation is an underdog to pass this year. Fortunately, we gain tremendously simply by being in the game. For one, being on offense is our best defense against our opponents on Capitol Hill. Secondly, the continued federal push is encouraging state legislatures to move forward with their own poker bills. Another benefit is that state-level stakeholders who have not yet come to agreement are now looking over their shoulders. They are being drawn into coalitions by these continued attempts at Congress to take action. And, of course, we benefit from continued media coverage on this issue.
As we know, our fight is a tough one. That’s why we players are organized to stand up for our rights. Fortunately, we can improve our odds greatly by taking action. We can all be sure to let lawmakers know to support our right to play. We can also all take part in the Poker Daily Action Plan each and every day! As the rising tide of online poker support will lift all boats, let’s keep creating an environment favorable to action on this important issue.
