Weekly Update from Rich Muny, VP of Player Relations
As you have likely heard, there has been widespread discussion regarding online poker legislation on Capitol Hill. Having poker legislation under serious consideration on the Hill is certainly great news; it shows just how much our efforts as a community in advocating for our rights are paying off!
I am glad we are all doing our part to be heard. Given that the House of Representatives voted to ban online poker in 2006 by 317-93 (that bill, the freestanding HR 4411, was watered down in the Senate backrooms and emerged attached to the SAFE Ports Act as the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act), having Congress considering any legislation to authorize online poker is obviously a huge, almost unprecedented turnaround.
As the bill takes its ultimate form, there will be many proposals to shape it. Some proposals will be favorable to players and some will not. Proposals for penalties for players on unlicensed sites (not a retroactive penalty…rather, one on future play), blackout periods, and requirements for states to opt in legislatively to participate rather than having to opt out to not participate clearly fall in the latter category. Fortunately, nothing has been finalized and PPA is lobbying Capitol Hill with a true sense of urgency to represent our interests as players to win the maximum in player-friendly provisions.
While no side will get 100% of what they want, PPA will work in earnest to obtain a bill that the poker community can support. As player advocacy efforts give PPA lobbyists the ammo they need in their fight, let’s all do our part to keep the pressure on our lawmakers by telling them we want good poker legislation.
