Weekly Update from Rich Muny, VP of Player Relations
It was a big week for poker, to be sure. The Las Vegas PPA Town Hall was a terrific success…standing room only! We also saw Delaware become the second state in the nation to authorize intrastate online poker (plus online casino gaming). We saw Full Tilt Poker founder Ray Bitar turn himself in to federal authorities.
I hope you were able to attend the town hall event to hear key poker backer Congressman Joe Barton address the poker community after delivering the “shuffle up and deal” to the World Series of Poker ® crowd. He was joined by Executive Director John Pappas, 2004 World Series of Poker Champion & Board Member Greg Raymer, Poker Hall of Famer & Board Member Linda Johnson, Director of Grassroots and External Affairs Drew Lesofski, Nevada State Director Lupe Soto, and me for a great discussion on the current landscape of poker advocacy. If you missed the event, I hope you will either download the MP3 of the event and listen while on-the-go (click here) or watch the event via YouTube (click here or below):
In legislation news, Delaware passed legislation authorizing intrastate online poker and online casino gaming. I am encouraged to see states having the wisdom to allow their citizens to play the great game of poker in their own homes on their own Internet connections. While the legislation may not be all that we would like as players, it shows that grassroots activism is very effective in pushing legislatures into action. My hope is that their action will help spur the federal government and/or additional states into taking action on legislation licensing and regulating online poker. Finally, Full Tilt Poker founder Ray Bitar turned himself in to federal authorities this week. Detailed coverage is here. For discussion, check out the Two Plus Two thread here.
