Television and the Internet have changed that, giving 21st century poker status in the casino industry. And despite the recent economic downturn taking a bite out of revenue, casinos are expanding their poker amenities.

At least 12 Reno-Sparks properties have poker rooms. The Atlantis Casino Resort Spa just opened a new nine-table room.

In the past two years, the Peppermill expanded its poker room to 16 tables — Reno’s largest — as a part of its $400 million renovation.

The Grand Sierra Resort and Casino remodeled its seven-table room and can accommodate more than 30 tables for large tournaments.

On any Saturday night, at least 5,000 people are playing poker in Reno-Sparks poker rooms, Heintz estimated.

“It was an amenity, now it is a business driver,” said Kelley Bailey, poker room manager at the Atlantis. “And you better make sure that it is good.”
