Colorado

CO UpdateTuesday, February 16, 2010, PPA Executive Director John Pappas On Saturday, February 27th, over 150 PPA members attended the Colorado PPA State Committee’s free workshop and poker tournament. The workshop educated those in attendance on how to make a difference for poker in the Colorado political system. State Director Gary Reed spoke about how we as poker players can help elect candidates for local, state, and federal office who share our commitment to protect the game of poker. After the workshop, the State Committee hosted a luncheon followed by a free Denver Poker Tour tournament at La Palmas Mexican restaurant.

You can learn more about the Colorado PPA State Committee by following them on Facebook.

Massachusetts

MA Update On February 23, 2010, Patrick Fleming, director of PPA’s Litigation Support Network, and Andrew Woods of the Global Poker Strategic Thinking Society (GPSTS) at Harvard provided testimony in front of the Massachusetts State Legislature’s Joint Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies. The committee is considering H 4069, which would classify poker as a game of skill in the state of Massachusetts.

At the hearing, PPA submitting a white paper describing the role that skill plays in determining the outcome of a game of poker and offered an overview of the scientific studies that address that question.

In most jurisdictions in the United States and in Massachusetts, the definition of gambling depends on whether or not a game’s results are predominantly due to skill or chance. Given the law’s reliance on the skill versus chance classification, legislation like H4069 is critical to ensuring that every American has the freedom to play poker, either with friends around the kitchen table or online at the computer table.

Both he and PPA Kentucky State Director Rich Muny were on hand throughout the tournament to meet with Kentucky’s poker players to discuss the future of poker in both the Commonwealth and the nation.

The event was a great success. PPA presented the Knights of Columbus with a donation, gave a speech updating everyone on PPA’s efforts in Kentucky, and gave away four boxes of shirts, caps, decks of cards, and other poker paraphernalia while discussing the future of poker with many of the attendees.
