Weekly Update from Rich Muny, VP of Player Relations
There are two big news items this this week. The first, of course, is the introduction of legislation to license Internet poker by Congressman Joe Barton (R-TX). HR 2666, the Internet Poker Freedom Act of 2013, would set up a regulatory framework to foster competition among sites while mandating strong consumer protections. Be sure to view the full bill and PPA’s press release applauding its introduction.
I am very excited and enthused by this development. For one, this, along with Congressman Peter King’s (R-NY) bill to license online poker and online casino-style gaming, ensures we will remain on offense on Capitol Hill. As I mentioned last month, this should also help boost state efforts to license online poker. Another benefit at the state level is that stakeholders who have not yet come to agreement are now over their shoulders. They may be drawn into coalitions by continued Congressional attention to this issue.
The other big news this week is yesterday’s Senate Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety, and Insurance hearing on Internet poker and Internet casino-style gaming. The hearing, entitled “The Expansion of Internet Gambling: Assessing Consumer Protection Concerns,” included a bit of fear mongering and some substance. Fortunately, every concern raised at the hearing would be best addressed through licensing and regulation, which the message we will continue to send to Capitol Hill!
I encourage you to watch the archived webcast of the hearing. It begins at time point 0:26:00.
Take Action
Let’s be sure to reach out to the members of the subcommittee. They are paying attention now, as they are gauging public reaction to the hearing. If you use Twitter, please take a moment to send a prefilled, editable poker tweets to each subcommittee member: HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, & HERE
Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO), chair of the subcommittee, posted a tweet on Monday regarding the large volume of tweets she has been receiving from poker supporters. We’re being heard, so let’s keep up the activism for our game!
