Weekly Update from Rich Muny, VP of Player Relations
With last week’s historic victories for online poker, we are seeing more and more states looking into online poker! As I mentioned last week, we just needed a few dominoes to fall to bring other states on. Once a few of them move, I believe even more states will follow.
Please be sure to do your part to ensure these dominoes topple by letting your lawmakers know that you expect them to support poker in all its forms – online, bricks-and-mortar, home games, charity games, etc! I thank everyone for keeping up with this. We are making a difference.
Maryland Home Game Bill Hearing
Yesterday, H.B. 486, a bill that will allow Marylanders to host and play in home poker games had a hearing in front of the State Assembly Ways and Means Committee at the State Capitol in Annapolis.
PPA activists Jim Hudson and Brian Bohlayer testified on behalf of H.B. 486 along with State Representative Kirill Reznik, who sponsored the bill. Marylander and 2005 WSOP Main Event Runner-Up Steve Dannenmann submitted written testimony in support of the bill.
Many members of the Committee mentioned that they regularly play in home games and expressed their desire to see H.B. 486 pass. After the hearing, Rep. Reznik met with the PPA Director of Grassroots and External Affairs Drew Lesofski. He told Drew that this bill is expected to pass out of committee quickly and head over to the Maryland Senate early next week. Rep. Reznik believes H.B. 486 has a very good chance of passing the Senate and making its way to the governor’s desk for signature.

Iowa Senate Advances Internet Poker Bill
Iowa Senate Study Bill 1068, a bill that would allow state-licensed casinos to run their own Internet poker sites, was passed out of committee last week, overcoming a critical hurdle on the way to passage by the Senate! S.S.B. 1068 is now headed to the Iowa Senate State Government Committee before going to the full Senate.
For PPA members who live in Iowa, please watch you inbox for updates and action alerts about this bill as it makes its way through the legislature!

Another Poker Bill Introduced in Texas
Texas State Representative Ryan Guillen has introduced H.B. 2098, a bill that addresses the legality of poker in Texas. Rep. Guillen wants to legalize non-raked games at private establishments that would require a membership to play. PPA is reviewing the bill in detail. Texas State Director Matt Allen is following this and coordinating poker advocacy grassroots activities in the Lone Star State!
