Weekly Update from Rich Muny, VP of Player Relations

Last week, I broke the news that the 2012 Republican Party Platform includes a plank advocating a national prohibition on online poker. I am pleased to report that reaction has been strong. Many poker players and supporters let GOP leadership know just how they feel about this attack on our game. I obviously condemn this plank without reservation and I know we will all continue to make ourselves heard on this important issue, through Election Day and beyond.

Yesterday, PPA learned that the 2012 Democratic Party Platform is silent on the issue of online poker. While clearly far better than advocacy for a ban, I think they missed a golden opportunity to reach out to America’s poker players and supporters in what is sure to be a very close election.

Let’s all continue to do our part to let all of our elected representatives know where we stand!

Gov. Gary Johnson Returns to the Poker Advocacy Webcast
The only pro-poker candidate in the presidential election, Libertarian nominee former Gov. Gary Johnson, has actively reached out to the poker community. Last year, he met with poker players at the PPA World Series of Poker® booth. I had him on my webcast, Poker Advocacy with Rich Muny, at that time as well.

With impeccable timing, I will have Gov. Johnson back on the program next Monday evening (9/10) at 8 pm ET / 5 pm PT for what is sure to be a great discussion! Listen at www.ontiltradio.com/ppa.

Take Action

Let’s all do our part today to speak up for our rights and ensure lawmakers see our enthusiasm and activism:
  1. Let’s recruit new activists by retweeting & favoriting today’s #Fight4Poker action plan HERE and HERE, sharing it on our Facebook walls HERE, and sharing it via Google+ HERE.
  2. Send prefilled tweets to GOP leaders to tell them to disavow the anti-poker plank. Let them know it’s a bad bet for Election Day! HERE and HERE.
  3. The House Energy & Commerce Committee’s new site fails to mention HR 2366, the Online Poker Act, despite the fact that this bill is in that committee! Let’s make and like posts on Rep. Fred Upton’s Facebook wall asking for inclusion of HR 2366: HERE.
  4. Please bookmark the #Fight4Poker plan on Twitter HERE. Thanks for participating!

PPA to Attend Gaming Policy Conferences

This month, PPA Executive Director John Pappas will speak on behalf of the poker community at two Internet gaming policy conferences.

The first conference, Power Summit 2012 — hosted by eGR North America, a leading publication for the gaming industry — takes place next week in southern California. Pappas will speak on a panel focusing on the prospects of intrastate regulation of Internet gaming vs. a federal solution. Joining Pappas will be Senator Rod Wright, the primary author of California’s Internet poker legislation, Mark Lipparelli, Chairman of the Nevada Gaming Control Board, and Joe Brennan Jr., Chairman of iMEGA.

Later in September, Pappas will be representing poker players at the U.S. Online Gaming Law forum in Las Vegas, Nevada. The forum will bring together key regulators, distinguished in-house counsel, expert legal advisors, and business leaders from casinos, online operators, lotteries, tribes, and tech companies from across the country and beyond. The forum will address critical issues facing the future of online gaming. Also speaking at the conference is PPA consultant former U.S. Congressman Jon Porter.

The PPA’s presence at these conferences is an important piece of the organization’s advocacy efforts. We serve as the players’ voice at these industry events and remind the business side of Internet gaming that the interests of the poker consumer must be at the forefront when making business decisions.
