excerpt:
One of those interesting online gambler political initiatives took place over the last few days when the Poker Players Alliance suggested to US fans that the Republican Party Platform Committee might be a good place to make their views known (see previous Online-Casinos.com/InfoPowa report). The Platform Committee is responsible for presenting the party’s platform or manifesto, and runs a website where suggestions and comments on what should or should not be on the platform can be posted.

Putting his own G-rated spin on a classic George Carlin riff, longtime Las Vegas sports gambler Kelso Sturgeon likes to say he makes sure to avoid the polls each Election Day.
Instead, he goes to a local casino to play video poker.
That way, Sturgeon figures, at least his activity on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November stands a chance of generating some kind of a positive outcome.

MINNEAPOLIS — The Republican Platform Committee stripped a prohibition of Internet gambling from its draft platform, as part of an effort to appeal to the broadest possible constituency.
The passage had been a part of the last two platforms, and was opposed by virtual poker players. Contentious provisions could still be added by amendment to the platform.

GUADALUPE COUNTY — Nearly a dozen people at two local underground poker parlors have been issued citations for illegal gambling in the wake of a months-long undercover investigation by county officials.
Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Investigator Lt. Poker chips get advertised as Father’s Day gifts in sporting goods stores. TV shows with play-by-play tournaments are beamed into living rooms. Nationally, the poker craze is everywhere.
But in South Carolina, hosting a kitchen-table card game might still bring the police knocking on your front door with a warrant.

Siobhan Grennan learned how to play poker to please a man. She was then just old enough to count the pennies from her paper route, and the man – her brother, three years her senior – was sufficiently bored that he was prepared to spend a few hours with his sis. But the hours added up, and by the time Siobhan was 14, her big bro figured she was ready for the big leagues: playing with his friends.

It was only a matter of time before the Poker Players Alliance (PPA) became involved in the Republican National Convention (RNC), which kicks off on September 1st at the Xcel Energy Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. At the RNC, the PPA will be reaching out to members of Congress who have historically not been friendly to legalized internet gambling in the United States. The Republican Party led the charge to pass the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) in 2006 and, at a recent hearing, forced the law’s ambiguity to continue. This time around, the PPA has partnered with the American Gaming Association (AGA) to benefit the Paralyzed Veterans of America.
