All bets are off.
That was the news organizers of Erath County United Way’s benefit poker tournament received just days before the charitable game was set to get rolling.
While a number of locals were ready to ante up for the event, Assistant District Attorney Jason Cashon was left to deal the bad news that in Erath County, and the State of Texas, gambling, even for a good cause is illegal. Call it ironic, Texas Hold ‘Em, when played in the Lone Star State is a violation of the Texas Penal Code.
The event, which was scheduled to take place Saturday at the City Hall at City Limits, would have delivered a 32-inch LCD HDTV, donated by Gifford Electronics, and a custom bracelet crafted and donated by Swindle Jewelry to the champion. Event organizers said they will return all of the donated prizes to local business owners and other contributors who stepped up to help
