excerpt:

You would never know there is economic instability in this country if you judged it by participants at this year’s World Series of Poker finals, playing through its 55 events at the Rio All-Suites Hotel in Las Vegas. Every event begun so far has broken registration records.

The first event, begun May 30, was a $1,500 buy-in, No Limit Texas Hold ‘em event. Almost 4,000 players bought into the event. Last year 3,151 players entered this event. The 3,929 entries this year established the record for the most players to enter a tournament other than the main event. The top prize for this year’s event was $794,000.
