Brian is exactly right. The restrictions and rules under which "free" bar poker leagues can operate are many and often times as varied as the different cities and counties they operate in. (At least in Colorado) The gambling statutes make it very clear that risking anything of value in anticipation of reward is gambling and illegal. Therefore, the only way to set this issue aside is to have Poker declared a game of skill. Such a declaration is not impossible. Witness the case in Massachuetts (/press-releases/2010/02/23/press-release-ppa-testifies-before-ma-committee-on-poker-as-game-of-skill-022310/)where it may well transpire that Poker as a game of skill is codified in the law. Should we accomplish that, Poker becomes one of the identified games of skill (Golf, Chess, Checkers etc. are already so identified) in Colorado law that is exempt from the gambling statutes. Once that is accomplished, the various Cities and Counties will have to fall in line as to their classification of Poker for law enforcement. How can you help? Write or call your State representative and ask that they introduce a bill similar to the one in Mass. Write your newspaper or call into your favorite talk show and bring up the issue. More importantly, attent the caucus for your particular party and ask that "Poker as a game of skill" be made a part of your party's platform. This will work if every one of the approximately 20,000 members of the PPA in Colorado make a personal commitment to do something to further Poker in this State. We are too big of a voting block to be ignored.
