WASHINGTON — If Internet gambling is legalized and taxed, Nevada could receive more than $300 million during the next decade to boost education and job training for foster children in the state, according to advocates of a bill introduced this week in the House.

Rep. Jim McDermott, D-Wash., who offered the bill, described it as a revision of legislation he introduced last year to tax Internet gambling companies if they are licensed and regulated by the Department of Treasury.

LAS CRUCES — The federal entity that regulates tribal gaming has issued a subpoena to the Fort Sill Apache Tribe of Oklahoma, seeking details about a poker tournament the tribe hosted last month in Akela.

The National Indian Gaming Commission, in a July 15 letter, demanded the tribe provide information, including a description of the tournament, the number and names of participants and the names of employees.

I am planning a trip to Las Vegas after November of this year for some high-stakes poker, as I do about once a month. My question is: Why would it be bad if I didn’t have to leave Colorado? If I could, I would choose stay in Colorado hotels, spend my money in Colorado restaurants and tip Colorado workers. But there are some who do not consider the creation of new jobs, offering more reasons for tourists to visit our state and keeping Colorado money at home a good thing.

The bill by California Assemblyman Lloyd Levine (D-Van Nuys) which would lead to the legalization of intrastate online poker in California has cleared a significant legislative hurdle and is on its way to the Senate Appropriations Committee in August, its final stop before coming before the full State Senate for a vote. If the bill is passed, and signed by the governor, California would become the first state to legalize intrastate online poker for its residents.

Curtin was among about two dozen people playing Texas Hold ’Em in an event called World Tavern Poker, which is held Tuesday nights at D’Laney’s Sports Bar and Grill.

LANSING — Arlene Minsky couldn’t tell you who the current World Series of Poker champion is. Nor is she positive that a straight flush beats four of a kind.

Minsky is the president of the Clinton County Arts Council, a non-profit organization based in St. Johns that promotes the arts and cultural heritage of Clinton County.

The council is hosting an open house this month for its new “train museum,” in St. Johns — complete with restored train cars, models and artwork housed in a historical train depot.

It couldn’t have happened without poker.

ESPN and Harrah’s are trying to reignite interest in televised poker by changing the format for the Main Event. In years past, the tournament was played and filmed in July, but it reached the airwaves several months later. Those who followed poker knew who won the championship long before it aired.

This year, the Main Event will be whittled down to nine players on Monday. But the finalists will return to the Rio Nov. 9-10 to play for the title, where it will be filmed and broadcast immediately following its conclusion.
