The province’s illegal gambling unit hit the jackpot when they raided four alleged gaming houses over the weekend, netting 47 people — including two minors.

Although the simultaneous raids folded four operations, Toronto Police Det. Emilio DiPoce said the Friday night raids just scratch the surface of the GTA’s illegal poker games that generate millions for operators.

Texas hold ‘em fans will play for a trip to Las Vegas at Snowshoe Mountain resort today, after West Virginia Lottery Commission officials said the poker tournament is not illegal.

Wheeling officials raised questions this week about whether Snowshoe and the tournament’s sponsor, the West Virginia Radio Corporation, could hold the tournament. They said state law allows gambling only at the state’s racetracks and its numerous limited video lottery parlors.

LAS CRUCES — The federal entity that regulates tribal gaming has issued a subpoena to the Fort Sill Apache Tribe of Oklahoma, seeking details about a poker tournament the tribe hosted last month in Akela.

The National Indian Gaming Commission, in a July 15 letter, demanded the tribe provide information, including a description of the tournament, the number and names of participants and the names of employees.

While the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) has devastated internet poker, separate, quiet battles are being fought, and won, to make poker legal in bars under state laws.

The fight over the rights of bars to run Texas Hold’em tournaments does have some significant differences with the better known Prohibition on alcohol. Legally, Prohibition was a federal issue. It involved an actual amendment to the U.S. Constitution, a rare and difficult feat to accomplish, and a federal statute, limiting adult Americans’ right to drink alcoholic beverages.
