Fahrenkopf was Chairman of the Republican Party for six years while Ronald Reagan was President. He’s been the CEO of the AGA since 1995. Over the past 13 years, he’s developed a keen understanding of what challenges the AGA must overcome in order to continue to be influential in the U.S.: “We know from the public opinion polling that 80-85% of the American public has no problem with gambling. However, there’s a hardcore 15% of the population who are opposed to all forms of gambling on moral grounds. That segment is led by the Methodist Church and the Presbyterian Church, where the dictates provide that gambling is a sin. Also, too many state legislators think that gambling is the ‘golden goose.’ They believe that you can milk the golden goose by raising tax rates to levels that are untouchable.”

Tuesday marked the second day of an important week for the American Gaming Association. The AGA, which is headquartered in Washington, D.C., launched the 11th annual Responsible Gaming Education Week (RGEW), which takes place between now and Friday, August 8th. The goal of the RGEW is to encourage casino “employees to begin a conversation about responsible gaming at home, on the job and in the community,” according to a press release distributed by the organization. AGA President and CEO Frank Fahrenkopf commented, “Responsible gaming is not just an issue for casinos, it’s an issue for the whole community.”

WASHINGTON — A new bill that would limit the Internet gambling ban to sports betting while exempting poker and other online wagering is splitting poker advocates.
The Poker Players Alliance, a group that lobbies Congress against the ban, is opposed to the bill. Former Sen. Alfonse D’Amato, R-N.Y., who is the alliance chairman, said it does nothing to clear up confusion about the definition of unlawful Internet gambling.
