Did the GOP Really Lose Its Way?
    by Rich Muny

Many conservative politicians, radio hosts, and pundits have repeatedly stated their shared belief that the Republican Party “lost its way” prior to the 2008 election. In their minds, the entire conservative movement believed in limited government and low spending and was simply corrupted by absolute power. They may be surprised to learn that this is not the case at all. The fact that party leadership turned its back on limited government and low spending was entirely predictable. In fact, it should have been expected.....

As a registered Democrat who embraces parts of political ideology from both parties (and never votes 'the party line') I agree with this article totally. What the author did not say (probably because he is a Republican, and did not want to be banned by the party) was that the extreme right of the Republican Party has a very strong voice in what the party does and the overall platform. That is how they were able to place abolishing internet gambling in the parties platform.

Think about how scary that is. We have terrorists (both foreign and domestic) running around, youngsters dying in a war abroad, all types of uncertainy around us but they believe one of the solutions to everything is banning internet gambling.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the Democratic Party is better. What I am trying to say is that we live in a country where I thought we worked together for the good of all, with the understanding that I might not like something you do, but I tolerate it because there's no doubt you might have the same feelings concerning me.

    John,

I'm glad you liked the article. Thanks.

I'm the author and I don't think I shied away from anything. As a conservative, I simply don't believe in an "extreme right." Rather, I believe some conservatives are statists and some are not, and the statists are the ones who put this plank in the platform. The really scary thing there is that we poker players got it out of the draft platform by advocating for our rights, only to have it restored by the full committee.

You're 100% correct, that is the scary part of the whole issue.

"I simply don't believe in an "extreme right". Are you serious? The republican party lives off an authoritarian base which wants government control, with harsh punishments attached, of personal conduct matters. This party has a platform that demands a constitutional amendment to bar abortion, even though a substantial majority of the country wants abortion to be legal. This party wants to keep marijuana illegal, despite overwhelming evidence of the foolishness of that policy, and the democratic process legalization that has occurred in 11 states.

No surprise at all that the contemporary republican rabble wants to make gambling illegal. After all, behavioral evidence from all over the world must be ignored, and
reactionary psuedo-moralism must control public policy. Aided, of course, by chumps who think the republican party "lost its way" at the late date of 2008.
