Here’s another reason why online poker should be legalized and regulated:

I had a small bankroll at Ultimate Bet of about $400 that I built up from nothing with UB points after I cashed out after UIGEA passed. It took a while with part time small stakes play and some cashes in UB points tourneys, but I was proud of creating a bankroll out of nothing. Then the A few weeks ago, I logged on to Ultimate Bet to play some small stakes poker and I find out that my bankroll was basically gone. I of course contacted support and UB came up with several hands of no-limit hold’em play in which I lost $400 in about 7 hands. I was not awake at that time and no one has access to my computer, nor do I play on any other computer. Furthermore, these hands were not saved in Poker Tracker hands history. It’s been two weeks and UB claim that they are investigating this issue. The reason why I’m posting this is that I want to know if something similar happened to anyone here and to share my story of my account being hijacked. I would think that playing at UB and Absolute would be even more secure since their cheating scandals, but I guess it’s not.

Hi MandM_WSU, it was probally a keylogger and not the site. Ask UB and AP if they have some extra security features. I'm only familiar PokerStars. They have some extra security for those who choose to use it:

    The security pin is free.

    security pin

A PokerStars PIN’ is a six digit number that is issued by PokerStars, in addition to your password. Once a PokerStars PIN is set for your account, you will be required to enter your PokerStars PIN number by clicking on an on-screen keypad, every time you login.

Each time you try to login to your PokerStars account, the numbers will change position. That will stop most keyloggers from recording where you click and what buttons you press and help to protect the security of your account.

The use of the PokerStars PIN also enhances account security by providing an additional validation number, which would prevent you from being exposed to certain types of ‘phishing’ and ‘social engineering’ scams.

The RSA Security Token isn't free.

    security token

A RSA Security Token is a piece of hardware issued by PokerStars, in addition to your password.

The token displays a six digit code that changes every minute. The bars on the left hand side of the display count down to indicate when the code is about to change.

Once a RSA Security Token is enabled for your account, you will be required to enter your RSA Security Passcode every time you login.

The RSA Security Passcode is a combination of two elements:

1.Your four-digit RSA Security PIN followed by
2.The six-digits currently displayed on the window of your RSA Security Token.
Note that the RSA Security PIN is not related to your PokerStars PIN.

The use of the RSA Security Token enhances account security by providing two-factor authentication, requiring you to have ‘something you know’ (your PokerStars password and RSA Security PIN) and ‘something you have’ (your RSA Security Token).

This feature is a strong defense against keyloggers and unauthorized people accessing your account.

There are some reputable referal sites out there (like Poker Source... let me know if you want an reference, lol...) and I can see that there are some smaller poker rooms one needs to be careful of. However, you would think that the big ones, like Poker Stars, Full Tilt and in this case, Ultimate Bet, that they are more secure. I don't suscribe to the paranoia that online poker is rigged (with so many more hands, you're going to notice the bad beats more), but my concern is people hacking into other player's accounts. In my case, I suspect that someone did this and I'm concerned that since I'm a low-stakes player, Ultimate Bet would give a toss and do anything about it.

Hi TheEngineer, Why does my reply about the Security pin & Token only show when I'm logged in? Is it being blocked to all others? lol

    MandM_WSU can you see it?

    HoldemEagle,

You should be able to see it now.

  6. MandM, I would be surprised if UB didn't do something about it - however, they may not have a whole lot of recourse. You may be able to specifically ask them for copies of the logs related to that play - IP logged in from, the hands, etc - and you can build a criminal case against someone. That doesn't mean you'll get your money back, but you can try. If they chip dumped it to an account then cashed it out, you'll have some idea of where it went at least. If they just logged in, and sprayed your chips randomly across NL200, then you might be screwed.

You might also want to talk to Kahnawahkee(sp).

Someone hijacked your account, I doubt it was someone related to UB .. so.. you definitely need to scan your computer for viruses, trojans, rootkits, malware, adware, spyware, and every other bad-ware, and perhaps have it professionally examined as well, to make sure it's all cleaned. Change your passwords everywhere.

Yeah... the reason I posted here at PPA was to argure that this is a case in which I should be able to take some legal action. What looks like what happened is that my Hotmail account got hijacked (it happened to others, see: http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/54/poker-beats-brags-variance/ub-account-hacked-8k-stolen-529328/ ) and they dumped chips. I'm still waiting to hear back from UB... they did offer me $100 in tournament chips... at least that's something. I feel that if on-line poker were legal in the US, I could take legal action against MSN for not keeping my Hotmail account secure.

  8. well, the question is, how did your hotmail account get hijacked? via keylogger, or some sort of brute force attack on hotmail? It's your responsibility to protect your password, but it's their responsibility to protect their servers.
