Hi! My name is Mike O'Donnell and I play in a amateur poker league sponsored by the WPT. The State of Ohio Department of Saftey is trying to take away our league citing a some rule saying no game of chance can be played in a public place. They sent a letter to all the bars telling them stop the league at once. Is this legal. What can we do to get it back

Give me some help here mike and I will try and help back. It is clear that a poker tournament in which no player is required to pay an entry fee (or similar fee) is NOT illegal gambling, even under the laws of Ohio.
So the action taken here must be being based on Ohio's liquor code. If you can find me a link to this code, or if you can get the Ohio Dept. of Safety to say exactly what law they are relying on, I will be glad to look things over and see if there is a way to either fight or get around this action.

I used to play in the wptapl in ohio last summer. I was told that it wasn't illegal for us to play because there was no fee. I use to run some tourneys for them, and when I was ask by people if this was legal, I responded with what I was told. As long as there was fee for players then it was legal. However I was given some paperwork on Ohio laws on poker. One of the points said that if an establishment paid to have poker there then it was illegal, but can not confirm that.
