Legal issues around volunteer/free tournaments

  1. Obviously, there are many successful free poker tournaments that take place in restaurants/bars all over the country.
I'm wondering, is there a good site or resource on the issues that one may encounter when starting something like this up? Some friends and I are organizing a new Denver-area "tech meetup" (there are a variety in the area, based on web startups, programming languages like Java and Ruby, etc), called Denver Tech Poker - http://denvertechpoker.org.

We're obviously not playing for money, but do want to offer minimal prizes (books, t-shirts, etc) to winners at each event. Eventually, I'd like to see us taking donations from attendees and winners choosing which local charity receives those donations/proceeds.

I don't anticipate problems, but just wondering if we need to be aware of anything that others have run into in this area.
