  1. I've been working hard to get the state senators to at least consider legalizing charity poker in NE. I finally found a senator who said he will seriously consider it. In addition, I mentioned what I was doing to an editor at the Omaha World Herald and he thought it would be an interesting story since it gives charities another method of raising cash in a tough economy. If you're interested in reading it, here it is:

It was supposed to run today in the Business section but the editor called to tell me that they are seriously considering placing it on the front page so they moved it back a day! Will find out in the morning if that happened or not.

I hit up a buddy at a tv station and he may be lining up an interview for me with them. That would be cool.

Not sure if this will happen but I'm doing everything I can to try and make it happen. If it works, I'll be sure to lay out everything I did in case someone else wants to do the same thing in their state.

  2. Congratulations, and good luck with the rest! If you guys open up charitable gaming, and allow the dealers to make more than $50 max in a day, I'd be more than happy to pick up and move! :D

  3. Yeah. I saw that limitation in the laws for Michigan. I don't understand the reasoning behind it though.

  4. I imagine that much of the reason is due to casinos wanting the better employees. Although, honestly, $50 a day would be more than enough if I could accept tips. Heck, give me $20 a day, and tips. :)

  5. There is a poll in the middle of the website: http://www.omaha.com which asks if you support charitable poker. So far it's being favored at 68%. Feel free everyone to 'rock the vote' in this poll. :-) The poll is the middle of the page about halfway down.

Picks, that is a great article and you deserve high praise for all your hard work!

Let us, especially us outside NE, know if there is anything we can do to help.

  7. Only poll I see is "should Omaha assess a garbage fee".
Well, if they were making another million plus a year from charitable gaming, maybe they wouldn't have to...

  8. The poll only lasted for a day. Not sure if they put them anywhere else on the site that shows the results from previous polls.

Good point Eblad. :-) They had to shut down some pools early and soon a few city owned golf courses. What I suggested is to maybe add $1 or $5 fee to each player who plays in a charity event. That money would go to that city which could be used to keep the pools and golf courses open.

Doing a radio show interview with a news station in Lincoln on Wed. Wants to discuss the skill vs chance factor primarily so I need have some of that ammo prepared and ready to go.

For a radio interview, you are not going to get a lot of time to make the "skill v. chance" point, so my suggestion is to emphasize two easy to understand (for the masses) points:

    1) "If poker was not a game of skill, how could there be recognized masters of the game who have consistently won over many years? Doyle Brunson, Daniel Negreanu, and Phil Ivey just happens to be the luckiest men on earth? I don't think so."

    2) "To any one who plays poker at any level of seriousness, it is obvious that just like in any other cards game of skill, like Bridge for example, how you play your cards is a far more important factor than what cards you are dealt."

If you are questioned on the perceptive point that sometimes poker is decided by luck, and made to recognize an example of someone sucking out on TV, my suggested response is: "Of course there is SOME luck in poker, and that is also true of any game humans play. The question is not whether luck is a part of the game, but whether luck or skill is the more important part of the game. Did you know that studies have shown that over 75% of all poker hands on average end without the cards ever being shown? In all those hands someone has convinced everyone else to fold, and the actual cards were not considered. If the cards are not considered 75% of the time to determine who wins, how can they be the most important part of the game?"

    Hope that helps,

  10. Good points to emphasize Skallagrim. If you could email me again that would be great as I purged my emails awhile back and forgot to add you.

Well I should be getting some good exposure over the next week or so. I have the first interview on Wed with the radio news station in Lincoln. I emailed an Omaha radio news station and the radio host said he'll get me on the radio within the week. A buddy of mine is starting a new sports radio show and I'll be on his show later next week. There is a good shot I'll be doing a TV interview on Tuesday. I'll find out after they have their morning meeting to see if it's something they want to do.
